We’m not sure why – it’s not like astronauts are allowed to sip on their favorite brand of whiskey all day long while they’re circling our planet – but Ballantine’s commissioned the first whisky glass specifically engineered to be used in space.
Up there, the liquid would float around as shapeless globules, but this interesting Ballantine’s Space Whiskey Glass solves that problem for good. Designed with the help of a group called the Open Space Agency, the glass magnetically adheres to a metal surface or comfortably fits in an astronaut’s gloved hand, so this thing probably won’t get lost around the spaceship.
Constructed with medical-grade ClearVue plastic, a special chamber is filled from the bottom through a nozzle, enabling the glass to suck up the smooth drink thanks to spiral tubes culminating in a narrow mouthpiece.
Rose gold was the exquisite material used for the base and mouthpiece of this glass, while the nonreactive nature of the plastic will prevent it from affecting the whisky’s taste. As a bonus touch, the master blender from Ballantine’s, Sandy Hyslop, has created a unique batch of Space Blend whisky; can you speculate on what Ballantine’s aromas and flavors could tease someone’s pallets in space?
