TAG Heuer is a Swiss luxury brand known for the amazing watches it manufactures. Now the company plans to bring its widely acclaimed craft and expertise to the world of high-end smartphones, with the release of the Meridiist Infinite.

In addition to its exquisite look and feel, the “communication instrument”, as TAG Heuer is calling it, is supposed to stay charged basically forever, thanks to an invisible photovoltaic cell built into the sapphire crystal screen. While the technology is nothing new – a Wysips transparent solar film placed between the glass and LCD elements of the display – it will be interesting to see how practical its use will be in this case. The system automatically begins to charge the phone when exposed to natural light and to a lesser extent artificial light and should be enough to at least keep the phone in stand0by mode.

The company plans to only release 1,911 Meridiist Infinite phones, this peculiar number selected as an homage to the first dashboard chronograph designed for aircraft and automobiles patented by TAG Heuer in the year 1911. And of course, each unit will be made from quality materials such as Titanium grade 5, carbon and rubber. No price has yet been released, though we can be certain that, given the technology used and the label on the device, the Meridiist Infinite will cost a small fortune.
