It’s said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but things are about to reach a completely new and unforeseen level of friendship in just a couple of weeks.
Sotheby’s, the world’s most renowned auction house, has just announced what might just be the most incredible event, dedicated to all the ladies who are deeply in love with these precious stones that reflect the spectre of light in the most majestic way.
The 1109-carat “Lesedi la Rona” is the largest gem- quality rough diamond to be discovered in over a century, and it will be part of a stand-alone sale in London on June 29, 2016. Measuring 66.4 x 55 x 42 mm, about the same as a tennis ball, this extraordinary diamond is estimated to cost over $70 million.
According to a study by the Gemological Institute of America, Lesedi La Rona is one of the world’s rarest types of gems. It shows off the same top color and transparency, an appearance commonly associated with type IIa diamonds, which represent less than 2% of all gem diamonds.
Independent reports hint towards the potential to yield the largest top-quality diamond ever and there’s apparently a high probability that the resulting polished diamonds will be “D” color, which is the highest classification for white diamonds.
This all sounds like a sound investment – not to mention an eccentric gift but who dares come close to it? I’m sure a lot of billionaires would love to add Lesedi la Rona to their precious gemstone collection.
