Adrère Amellal Eco Lodge is an Enchanting Haven in the Sahara Desert

Often when you talk about a great retreat in the middle of the wilderness, you refer to it as an oasis. Well, this time it’s the real thing, probably the closest an actual oasis has been to actually being considered a cultural and historical landmark. We’re talking, of course, about the Siwa Oasis, in the Sahara Desert, an ancient Egyptian oasis which used to be home to an Oracle of god Amon, a place Alexander the Great himself endeavored to visit after conquering the great North African kingdom. We’re not where he staid, but if he’d been around today, it would’ve probably been somewhere like the Adrère Amellal Eco Lodge.

This excellent resort has all you need for an unforgettable stay in the heart of the desert. There isn’t much in terms of technology, not even electricity, so you’ll have to rely on candles and the Moon and stars for lighting. Accommodations include 40 hand-built rooms which blend seamlessly into the landscape, and are also very comfortable, with a certain rustic charm about them.

Located eight hours away from Cairo, even getting to Adrère Amellal is quite a trip! But if you’re the kind of person who enjoys an adventure and wants to explore a place of rugged beauty and great historical and cultural significance, then this is the perfect destination for you.
