It’s been quite some time since Koenigsegg revealed something new, but after the company’s company’s recent announcement, it seems the wait has been worth it. Described as a “luxury megacar” and an “alternative to Koenigsegg’s traditional extreme lightweight race-like road cars,” the Regera is another stunning vehicle from the prestigious Swedish carmaker.

The megacar’s most remarkable feature is its Koenigsegg Direct Drive system, which brings together a 5.0-liter V8 engine and three electric motors, resulting in a jaw-dropping total output of over 1500 horsepower! This technology replaces the usual transmission, creating direct drive to rear axle from the combustion engine without the need of multitude gears or other traditional types of variable transmissions. This means that, while traveling on the highway, the KDD can reduce drivetrain losses by more than 50% compared to traditional transmissions or CVTs.

According to the Swedish manufacturer, the three electric motors (one for each rear wheel and one on the crankshaft) comprise “the most powerful electrical motor set-up in production car history.” Each of the three is powered by a 9.27 kWh, 620 Volt battery pack.

The Regera accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a lightning-fast 2.8 seconds, but even more mind-blowing is the fact that the megacar can go from a standstill to 250 mph (400 km/h) in just 20 seconds – so you’ll have to take care to strap yourself in really well, or perhaps consider some fighter pilot training before you go behind the wheel of one of these cars!

No word regarding the pricing from Koenigsegg, but it has been revealed that only 80 Regeras will be manufactured.
