Perhaps more than any other name in the fashion world, Chanel is synonymous with luxury. Yet true beauty doesn’t only come from the designs of creative geniuses like Karl Lagerfeld, but also from the work of the skilled artisans who actually make those visions a reality. Chanel is fully aware of this, which is why at the beginning of December each year, the French couture house holds an event celebrating the craftsmanship of those artisans. This year, the 11th Métiers d’Art show was held at the Leopoldskron Castle in Salzburg.
The centerpiece of the entire collection is the four-pocket jacket, inspired according to Lagerfeld by the attire of elevator operators at the Mitterstill Hotel, which caught the eye of Coco Chanel. Furthermore, this is where the idea for the collection’s boxy jackets with wide-cut trousers comes from, giving the look a uniform-like vibe.
None of the excellent work Chanel does would be possible without the workshops the brand collaborates with. These suppliers are couture embroiders Maison Lesage, gold and silversmith Goossens, shoemaker Massaro, hat maker Miason Michel, feather house Lemarié, button specialist Desrues, flower house Guillet, and glovemakers Causse, to name just a few of the dozen or so of them.
