Good news for all Porsche fans. The first prototype of the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder has started hitting the track with a black-and-white livery scheme that pays homage to the 917 racers. This hybrid supercar will reportedly be able to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in a whopping 2.3 seconds, up to a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h), with an average fuel consumption of 78 mpg.
Yeah, you’ve read it well – a bit over 3 liters of fuel over 100 km. It was made possible thanks to a plug-in hybrid power-train. The car boasts with 3 engines: an 80 kW / 107 HP electric motor mounted on the front axle, a 90 kW / 121 HP electric engine on the rear axle and the main, a 562 HP / 419 kW 4.6-liter V8.
This should’ve brought a load of compromises, but the specialists from Porsche have managed the task with ease. Featuring a full carbon fiber-reinforced polymer monocoque, adaptive rear axle steering, upward-venting exhaust system, fully adaptive aerodynamics and a 6.8 kWh Li-ion battery, the car can be driven with speeds of around 95 mph up to 15.5 miles on electricity only.
What we’ve got here is success, from the side of Porsche. It is their greenest and quickest car in history. Left-hand drive versions will enter production during September 2013. And there’s one more thing: the price – a pretty reasonable $845,000. Isn’t it?
