Joan Rivers passed away last year, but her legacy lives on – oh, and there’s also the matter of her estate, which still has to be settled. As part of the process, the late comedienne’s Upper East Side penthouse has been recently listed for a hefty $28 million.
In her unmistakable style, Rivers described the sumptuous 5,100-square-foot apartment as a place “where Marie Antoinette would have lived if she had the money.” How the penthouse compares to the Versailles Palace is a matter for debate, but what’s certain is that the pad includes some features that would make any member of royalty feel at home, like the 23‘ high ceilings and, especially, the gold walls.
The home takes up the top three levels of a seven-story Gilded Age mansion built in 1903 by millionaire John Drexel. After purchasing the property in the late 1980s, Rivers invested in extensive renovations, which also preserved some of the apartment’s period details and vintage charm.
Originally valued at $35 million, the penthouse is now on the market for $28 million and awaiting buyers who, like the legendary comedienne, have a taste for over-the-top opulence.
