Boasting a rather intriguing design and surnamed in a way that makes us think of galaxies and space ages, the brand new Spoutnik microwave oven from Fagor is a wonderful kitchen appliance. Manufactured in Barbarella style and resembling a flying saucer, this modern appliance is in fact an important feature of today’s kitchen.

It comprises a staggering transparent dome, which provides 360 degree views of the meal that’s heating and makes it possible for the cook to watch his beloved dish getting crunchy. In addition, the oven also includes an 11 inch (28 cm) turntable with grid lines which eases to process of positioning your meal inside the appliance.

The interior of the Spoutnik microwave open is illuminated once the cooking process begins, ranging from a red light during the cooking time to a blue light when the process is over. There’s also an audible signal that announces the end of the cooking time. In addition, the Spoutnik also comes with a lever which ensures a smooth lifting to the dome, allowing it to be owned up to a 65 degree angle. This way, the cook also has full access to the interior, easing the cleaning process.

In terms of size, the gadget is definitely not a disturbing piece of equipment. It measures 36.9 cm in width (14.5 inches), 42.9 cm in depth (16.9 inches) and 32.7 cm in height (12.9 inches). This means the oven features a total capacity of 23 liters – rather decent for the regular home, I’d say.

Thanks to a minimalist LCD control panel, the Spoutnik is extremely easy to use. The cook can choose from four different modes – High temperature, Low temperature, Reheat and Defrost. All you need to do is enter the cooking time, and that’s just it. It also boasts a Quick Start option – this one sets the gadget to full power through a timer which can be adjusted at increments of 5 seconds.

For a bit more originality and cooler design, the Spoutnik microwave oven is available in three designs – Ultraviolet, Green Flash and Blue Odyssey. They all boast the same price – £179 or $287 at today’s exchange rates.
