The extravagance of the Arabian leaders was already proven to be gone beyond common sense and mind-rectitude. Nevertheless, this hasn’t stopped Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arabian Emirates and Vice President, Ruler of Dubai, from announcing the plans to construct a $1.6 billion island off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence.

The project, dubbed the Bluewaters Island, will house the largest Ferris wheel in the world, with a diameter of 210 meters. Aside from the Dubai Eye, which is its actual designation, the project also includes dedicated retail, entertainment, accommodation and residential areas, alongside a state of the art, luxurious 5-star hotel as the project’s epicenter of tourism.

The construction of the project will reportedly start during April 2013, the primary contractors for the Dubai Eye being Starneth Engineering and Hyundai Contracting. Also to consider is that the island will be tied to the mainland via direct roadway from the Shaikh Zayed Road, pedestrian bridge linking it to the Jumeirah Beach Residence beachfront and mono rail.
