If you’re waiting for the next big thing in action cameras, it has arrived. GoPro unveiled its new Hero3+ line of cameras, which are up to 20 percent smaller and lighter than previous models and feature a 30 percent better battery life, as the company states.
“We saw the opportunity to design sharper lens, so we did it — improving GoPro’s already highly regarded image quality.” GoPro Founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said in a statement. Feature-wise there’s a new 1080 “SuperView” mode which takes footage from 4:3 aspect ratio, and presents it in an immersive 16:9 view.
The Black Edition cameras boast a mode that automatically optimizes exposure in low-light situations. And, of course, the cameras are still practically everything-proof: they’re waterproof down to 131 feet, and they can handle being pilloried by waves and bears. Like its predecessor, the highest-end Hero3+ Black Edition shoots 4k video footage (3840 x 2160), but that feature isn’t as exciting as it sounds. It’s a head-scratching limitation as the Hero3+ Black Edition can shoot 12-megapixel stills at 30fps.
The Silver edition gets some love, also, with 1080p now possible at 60fps, and 720 at 120 fps. So, all that’s left is for you to get 30 percent better at your daredevil activity of choice for 30 percent longer, and we’re all even. The Hero3+ is available with prices starting at $299 for the Silver addition, and $399 for the black. The previous flagships now retail for $329 and $249 respectively.
