The New York Auto Show has officially kicked off, and of the more notable car unveiled there so far is the new Porsche Boxster Spyder.
It comes with bumpers similar to those of the Cayman GT4, a unique engine cover, and a lightweight soft top which is, at least in part, manually operated. The interior, on the other hand, is similar to previous models, however this new version boasts sport seats and a new steering wheel that is 360 mm in diameter. In order to reduce weight, the radio and air conditioning system have been eliminated – something purists will no doubt appreciate, however if you can’t do without those features, they can be fitted for no additional cost.
Power comes from a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine outputting 375 PS (276 kW), which is mated to a manual transmission. Thus the new Boxster Spyder can go from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, before topping off at 180 mph (290 km/h). The car also comes with a host of other features highlighting its sporting character, like the improved steering system, high-performance brakes (sourced from the 911 Carrera), and a sports suspension that reduces the ride height by 20mm.
The Porsche Boxster Spyder is scheduled to hit the market in Germany this July, with prices starting at €79,945 ($87,100). It is expected to reach the US in October, with pricing there starting at $82,100 (plus a $995 destination charge).
