Although the specialists behind Bentley pretty much excel in manufacture, luxury, elegance and high performance, the brand simply lacks imagination in terms of design. Let’s take, for example, this 2014 Bentley Flying Spur, which was recently unveiled. It is programmed to debut on the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show and was reportedly designed to set a benchmark in the “luxury performance” automotive field.
Mind you, but the front end of this Bentley still looks like a bug if you ask me. A great improvement compared to the previous Bentley Continental models, this revamped Flying Spur still reminds of the Mulsanne and the Continental GT, having borrowed styling cues from both. The Flying Spur has also been fitted with LED-infused daylights, vertically directed grille, alloy wheels in 19 and 20 inch sizes and ventilated front fenders.
The body of the Flying Spur was bestowed with deformational elements and particularly reinforced sections, but the overall aspect is pretty sleek. The weight of the Flying Spur is also lower than the previous models by a full 50 kg (110 lbs), thanks to the insertion of aluminium front fenders and hood, as well as the polymer composite components in the boot lid.
Inside, the only parts that have remained similar to the previous generation are some controls and the front console, armrests, sun visors and grab handles. It not comes with more than 600 brand new parts, including wood trim with 7 possible veneers, updated infotainment system with display measuring 8 inches, alongside leather upholstery.
The rear passengers will most probably be delighted by the Wi-Fi connectivity, a 64 GB Hard Drive, two 10-inch displays and wireless headphones. There is also the Bentley signature “Touch Screen Remote” which deploys from the rear center console at the push of a single button. Through this system the rear passengers are able to control all sorts of functions, from infotainment to climate control and seat adjustments.
Those willing to pay a considerable bit in addition to the standard cost may choose the Mulliner Driving Specification. This package bestows the car with diamond quilted seats, alloy pedals, five-spoke alloy wheels measuring 21 inches in diameter, jewel filler cap and knurled gear lever.
Performance wise, the 2014 Bentley Flying Spur will exclusively be available with a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine that generates a whopping 625 HP (460 kW) and 800 Nm of torque (590 lb-ft), tied to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The 4-door sedan is therefore able to sprint from naught to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds up to a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).
