When you’re trying to achieve high-speeds on water, the drag from the hull sliding on the water’s surface plus the waves are some of factors holding you back. The Flying Phantom is a catamaran that goes around these issues by rising above the water’s surface using hydrofoil technology and thus reaching amazing levels of performance.
The Flying Phantom rises about two feet above the water on two J-shaped wings and from up there water drag and waves are no longer an issue, allowing the vessel to reach an impressive speed of 33 knots, a limit which its creators believe can be pushed even further. In addition to the extra speed, hydrofoiling means the sailing is also a lot smoother, making the whole experience better in every way possible.
The Flying Phantom is great for those who think of the sea as a means of getting a rush of adrenaline rather than a suntan. It was launched at the Paris Boat Show in late 2013 and is currently available for about $40,000.
