As a tribute to the famous, historic Antikythera mechanism, Hublot has recently come up with the Antikythera Sunmoon timepiece. Reminder – the Antikythera mechanism was discovered in Greek waters, back in 1901, and used to serve ancient peoples as an astronomical calculator, dating back to sometime between 150 and 100 BCE.

This particular timepiece is not only based on a Greek principle, but wears the Greek blood with pride. It looks Greek and has been fitted with astronomical symbols on the chapter ring and constellations on the hour hand. The sun and moon indications are on the dial side, while the solar and lunar calendars, alongside the sidereal position of the moon and the sun are displayed on the main dial. Of course, besides being able to read the time the wear is also able to calculate the phases of the moon with extremely high accuracy. The wearer can as well see the name of the constellation hidden behind the moon and the time required for the moon to pass across the constellation. The same principles are also true in the case of the sun.

The heart of the Hublot Antikythera Sunmoon beats at 21,000 vibes per hour, or 3 Hz, with a power reserve of 120 hours. The movement itself is a very complicated thing, boasting 295 parts and 7 complications. According to Hublot, only 20 units of the Antikythera Sunmoon will ever be manufactured.
