Gold seems to make everything better – and not just from an aesthetic point of view. Adding a bit of the precious metal does wonders for edible things as well, stuff like the Serbian alcoholic beverage known as rakija (pronounced ra-KEE-ya). In this case, we’re talking about something called Zlatija, a honey based plum brandy, made with the addition of 24-carat gold leaf.
According to Marija Jovičić, producer of Zlatije, the edible gold “improves the circulatory system, immune system and even psychological disorders”, while also adding that “in recent years, it is used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis”. Even without all these health benefits, you’ll still know you’re drinking a fine brandy containing the one thing that, more than anything else, is most associated which wealth and opulence – and that thing is gold. Thanks to this fact, Zlatija is increasingly being sought as a replacement for champagne, the staple beverage for special occasion.
