The Patron of Art Edition is Montblanc’s way of celebrating the contribution of historic patrons of arts. Starting in 1992, the German luxury goods manufacturer has honored an important figure who supported the arts of the artists. Last year, it was Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan and patron of, among others, Leondardo da Vinci. In 2014, Montblanc will pay tribute to an important figure in the world of music, the renowned piano maker Henry E. Steinway.

The limited edition consists of 4,180 exquisite, meticulously hand-crafted writing instruments, with an additional, even more precious 888.

The 4180 fountain pen is inspired by the classic Steinway Grand Piano with its intriguing combination of black lacquered barred and gold plated fittings. Its gilded cap is adorned with a 750 gold harp (considered the heart of the piano), while the gold plated clip is inspired by the screw clamps used to bend the grand piano into its graceful curve.

The iconic inscription ‘Steinway and Sons’, seen above the keyboard of every Steinway creation is also engraved on the gold plated cone ring. Montblanc’s famous emblem, the white star, can be seen on both editions, in precious black and white resin for the 4180, and in mother-of-pearl for the 888. The latter also features a skeletonised cap with the décor of the domed rotunda in New York’s Steinway Hall.

The 4180 will be available at $3,117, while the more exclusive 888 will set you back $11,000.
