The Via Lattea Glow-in-the-Dark Furniture Collection

The Via Lattea (Italian for “Milky Way”) furniture collection is made of recycled materials, but that doesn’t take anything away from its beauty and elegance. It consists of a series of sofas and cushions filled with transparent bubbles of pure air and “sidereal light”.

According to designer Mario Bellini, the collection was a project based on the pursuit of lightness and simplicity, and at the same time one that goes against conventional wisdom, based on materials you wouldn’t normally think to use for padded furniture.

The designer’s commitment to simplicity is clear from the materials used, like recycled steel mesh and fiber from sugar or grain packaging, to the design line. The distinctive glowing effect is achieved with the aid of LED lights placed inside. The effect is quite impressive, whether you decide to put them inside the house or outside. While aiming to be as simple and graceful as possible, the Via Lattea does actually come with quite a hefty price tag, with a three-piece sofa, for example, costing $7,800.
