This is probably The World’s Most Expensive Car Crash
The cause of the accident was an overtaking attempt on the slippery road – a 60-year-old Ferrari driver lost control and hit the median barrier, spun on the road and hit all the other cars that were trying to pass him by.
A more detailed list of the cars involved in the incident would be: 2 Ferrari 360 Modena, 2 Ferrari F355s, a Lamborghini Diablo, 2 Ferrari F430s (from which one was a limited edition Scuderia), a Nissan Skyline GT-R, 2 Mercedes Benz and the cheapest of them all is an eco-friendly Toyota Prius. Most of the 14 vehicles involved in the crash were sharing the same direction, while coming from the opposite direction, a Mercedes CL600 was hit by the flying bits and pieces.
The time of the crash was around 10:15 a.m. local time, on Sunday, right when the drivers were driving from Hiroshima to Kyushu. The total area over which the vehicles caused damage spread around several hundred yards, while the drivers couldn’t avoid the accidents due to their speed and the slippery road surface. The authorities needed 6 hours of closed traffic to remove the damaged cars from the freeway.
The good side of all this bad incident is that nobody got severely injured, thus the safety of the cars proved to be up-to-date. The current estimations over the damage produced easily reach the sum of $3 million.
