Haworth’s CalmSpace Uses Light and Sounds to Help People Sleep at Work

Time and time again, scientific research has shown that having happier, better rested employees improves productivity. Taking vacation days certainly helps and there’s even talk of a 4- or 3-day work week (supported by billionaires like Carlos Slim and Richard Branson).

Until then, you might like to try the less extreme idea of taking a short nap while at work, quickly recharging your batteries and allowing you to better acquit yourself of your duties. And since sleeping over the keyboard doesn’t sound too appealing, furniture manufacturer Haworth has created the CalmSpace, which is exactly what it sounds like: a capsule where you can enjoy a few dozen minutes of peace and quiet.

Haworth has collaborated with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering based in Stuttgart, Germany and the European Sleep Center in Paris in order to create this new product. The CalmSpace comes with a single mattress and uses a special lighting system and soundtrack cycles in order to help people fall asleep (red helps you snooze, while blue wakes you up). The sleep sessions can be set to last 10, 15, or 20 minutes.
